The 1280×720 format at a glance

The YouTube thumbnail at 1280×720 pixels (16:9) is the preview image that decides whether people click, often more than the title. It should be easy to read even as a tiny preview on a phone.

What it's good for

  • Eye-catching thumbnails with a few large words
  • Consistent thumbnails for a series, so viewers recognize it
  • A face plus a short, punchy text for higher click rates

Common mistakes

  • Putting important things in the bottom right, where the video length is shown
  • Using too much text, which can't be read at small sizes
  • Exporting below 1280×720 and risking a blurry image

How it works

  1. 1 Drag your image into the box or choose it: JPG, PNG, WebP and other common formats.
  2. 2 Move and resize the frame until the crop fits. The aspect ratio 16:9 is fixed, and “Auto-center” finds the subject on its own.
  3. 3 Choose the file format (JPG, PNG or WebP) and the quality if needed.
  4. 4 Download the image at exactly 1280×720 pixels, ready to upload.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the YouTube Thumbnail?

The recommended size is 1280×720 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Your image is downloaded at exactly this size.

Will my image be distorted?

No. The aspect ratio is fixed, you only choose the crop. If your subject doesn't fit the format at all, “Fit” places the whole image inside and fills the edges with a blurred version of the image.

Do location and camera data stay in the image?

No. When saving, metadata such as EXIF, GPS location and camera info is removed automatically. That protects you when you share images publicly.

Are my images uploaded?

No. With this tool, your image never leaves your device.

Is the tool free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no installation and no watermark from us.
