How it works

  1. 1 On a phone, the camera starts by itself. On a computer, drag in an image or PDF or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  2. 2 Hold the code steady in the frame. As soon as it's read, the camera stops.
  3. 3 You see the content in plain terms: where a link leads, a Wi-Fi network's name and password, a contact, an event or a bank transfer.
  4. 4 Copy what you need, save the contact or event as a file, or open the link if the destination looks right.

How the tool works

What it does

You scan QR codes with your phone camera or read them from a screenshot, photo or PDF, no app needed. Instead of gibberish, you see what the code means: where a link leads, a Wi-Fi network's name and password, a business card, an event or a bank transfer via GiroCode.

How it's built

Reading is done by zxing-cpp as WebAssembly in your browser; camera image and files stay on your device. We break down the content by the usual formats: WIFI for Wi-Fi, vCard and MeCard for contacts, iCalendar for events, EPC for GiroCode and SPC for the Swiss QR bill. For IBANs we verify the check digits.

Good to know: We never open links by ourselves. Look at the address under "Leads to" before you tap, because fake QR stickers are a common trick. Contacts and events are saved as a file, and your phone or calendar takes them over with one tap.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. With this tool your file never leaves your device.

Is it safe to open a QR code?

A QR code can lead anywhere, including fake websites. Fake stickers on parking meters, charging stations or parking tickets are a well-known trick. That's why we never open anything by ourselves: you first see in large type which address the link leads to, then you decide. Never enter bank or card details unless the address exactly matches the provider.

Are there limits on file size or page count?

The main limit is your device, because that is where the work happens. Files up to 100 MB work reliably. With very large files, an older smartphone needs a little patience.

Is the tool free?

Yes. All tools on Gatefrog are free to use, with no sign-up, no installation and no watermark from us.
